Hance Rapid (8), at river mile 77.2, can be scouted from either the right or the left banks. There are three options at Hance at all water levels above 5,000 cfs. A bony left run is an option and at higher levels, this run just gets easier. Beware of a large boulder in the lower section of this run. A right to left run is also an option. A right-to-right run is also a viable run, but requires threading your way between some very sharp pour-overs. Son-of-Hance, just one quarter mile downstream, has some large hydraulic waves that can be passed on the right or left, otherwise, hit ’em straight! While scouting, note the black basalt dike intrusion into the reddish brown Hakatai shale on river right.
