Willie Taylor Camp is a large camp at river mile 45.0 on river left. The riverbank has been severely cut by recent erosion, making access here difficult. If you hike a little way up behind camp and go to the base of a low cliff on your left as you are walking away from the river, a small plaque marks where Wilson “Willie” Taylor died of a heart attack in 1956. Lest you think rafting in the canyon is all gloom and doom, remember that we leave markers for those that didn’t make it, and the canyon would nearly be filled in if we left markers for those that did. Besides, Willie knew he had a heart condition, but just couldn’t be convinced to stay home.
